Ancient Mine in Cataluña. Oldest gallery mines in Europe, dating from about 4000 BCE, i.e. Neolithic. They served for the exploitation of variscite, a green mineral, which was used for the production of jewellery (beads for necklaces, etc.).

These were traded all over Cataluña. The mines were in production for over 800 years by farming and sheep-raising communities.

Today more than 100 extraction points, mainly within the town limits of Gavà are known.
There is a museum which houses the original objects found (tools, pottery, etc.) and an archeological park at the main site which is very well presented.

Interactive explanations in English, Spanish and Catalan languages.

Some Archaeological Documentaries in Spanish. The first one is about the Gavá mines.
