Kraków - Wawel
Kraków - Wawel submitted by SolarMegalith : Royal castle on Wawel hill occupies site of the early medieval Slavic hillfort from tribal period (photo taken on January 2012). (Vote or comment on this photo)
Prehistoric campsite and hillfort in Malopolskie

The earliest flint tools discovered on Wawel hill (probably it was an open campsite) are dated for Middle Palaeolithic period and are associated with Micoquien-Prądnik culture, which is considered as eastern outskirts of Micoquien culture (130.000 – 70.000 BC).

In early medieval tribal period Wawel was a site of the important hillfort of Vistulans tribe, one of the major Slavic tribes of early medieval Poland.

In 1000 BC Kraków became the capital of diocese, and in 11th century the firs cathedral has been built. Today Wawel is a cluster of monuments from various periods (including a royal castle with renaissance courtyard and cathedral with tombs of Polish kings), one of the most important parts of Polish heritage.
