Ancient Village or Settlement in Montenegro

Ancient Phoenician Settlement in what is now Montenegro. According to myth, it was founded by the legendary Cadmus, son of Agenor, around 1200 BCE. The location makes sence for a Phoenician trade emporium on account of the good natural harbour. Later in the 5th century BCE Illyrian celts, called Enchelei, settled there with heavy Greek influence. Much later it was conquered by the Romans in the second century BCE and became part of the Roman province of Dalmatia .
Two separate Roman/Hellenistic/Illyrian necropolises were found here during the construction of the Avala hotel in 1937. The remains of the Roman necropolis can be seen in the area between the Old Town and Hotel Avala.
Some items are in a museum, others are lost.

Location given for the old town.
