Hillfort in Bosnia

277 Meters Altitude. 3 KM West of Stolac and 2 Km North of Radimlja. Acccess via dirt road and then walking along vague path along edge of hill. Iron Age Hillfort eradicated by Romans. Massive town walls out of very large blocks with 2 great arched entrances that are now ruined. In the back, against the cliff there is a so-called Akropolis. There is a depression in the middle of the compound which housed a Forum or Temple of some kind according to Archeologists. There are massive ruins of foundations for individual dwelings in front of the ramparts. The beautiful site could do with some restoration or preservation, but in view of Bosnia's precarious state this is unlikely to be a huge priority.

Remains of the impressive south tower and gate. The detail on the gate is finer than in the rest of the wall and indicates that the Dalmatian Illyrians renovated or improved the gate well after the original wall was errected. Osanici Hillfort submitted by AlexHunger : Osanici Hillfort Iron Age Hillfort on ridge above Stolac, Bosnia. Romans conquered and destroyed this culture in second century BCE. There are foundations of dwellings outside the main wall. These are quite massive in themselves. It suggested the people abandoned their houses in times of danger and hid in the main part of the Hillfort, with all the official buildings.

This depression between the main town walls and Akropolis is believed to have held some sort of Forum style official building. I was reminded of cave at Monkodonja, but existance of snakes in the region persuaded me not to explore further.

These are the remains of the eastern tower and gate, which are in substancially worse shape than the southern gate and tower. The brittle nature of some of the remaining stones leads me to suspect that there must have been a raging fire at the time of the conq...

Osanici Hillfort submitted by AlexHunger : Osanici Hillfort Iron Age Hillfort on ridge above Stolac, Bosnia. This is the so-called Akropolis in the western corner of the hillfort. There is a sheer drop down the cliffs on three sides of this area. The Akropolis blocks exceed the size of the narona town wall blocks and are themselves dwarfed by the blocks in the main wall. The name of this ancient town is "Daorson"
it is named after a ilirian tribe "Daorsi"
It was helenised ,and produced its own money, with a boat on one side!
