On the south side of the Orewa River above the main road there was once a pa which would have controlled access over and along the Orewa River and would have protected the local Maori people who lived along its shores. The site is now destroyed but is included here as it is the location of an important adze find. Pictures of this finely worked hogback adze are included here and remind one of similar Neolithic implements seen in European museums. Hogback adzes are similar to those found in Eastern Polynesia and give evidence of links across the Pacific. The adze (or toki) measures 15 centimetres by 4 centimetres and is in the possession of a friend who is a respected local Maori and he has kindly agreed to photographs of it appearing here. The Orewa River provided a route inland from the coast and being located by the important Whangaparaoa Peninsula Maori settlements and close to their Mahurangi fishing grounds it had strategic significance for pre contact Maori tribes. There is an interesting legend that Pokopoko, a Maori leader, slayed a Taniwha (mythical water monster) located in a deep pool called "Te Rua-taniwha" up river from here. Pas or hill forts were always on defendable land and the contour map included in the photographs illustrates why this location was selected, it being the highest ground by the river crossing point. Settlements and shell middens are found around the vicinity of the pa and along the Orewa River banks which may be followed on a 7 kilometres walkway circuit. A small midden is covered by a glass panel part way along this walkway (on the southern half of the walk), whilst another ruined pa once stood overlooking nearby Red Beach (R10/83).
