Museum in Hawera, Taranaki, New Zealand.

Tawhiti Museum records the history of the Hawera area in Taranaki, New Zealand. It has displays of Maori artifacts and excellent models and dioramas of pre-European contact Maori pa and society. One especially well crafted model is of the nearby Turuturu Mokai fortified pa showing the ditches, palisades and other defenses of this important pa. The museum has an excellent display of the first European contacts with Maori and early settler history. There is a wonderful theme ride taking you through scenes from this era.

The museum is located 2 kilometres north of Hawera at 401 Ohangai Road. The museum website is: http://www.tawhitimuseum.co.nz
