Te Uma a Tongahake Pa
Te Uma a Tongahake Pa submitted by DrewParsons : The pa. December 2012. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Maori Pa in Taranaki, New Zealand.

Te Uma a Tongahake Pa is a pre-European contact era fortfied site adjacent to the huge Turuturu Mokai Pa site, both located on the outskirts of Hawera in Taranaki, New Zealand. The ditches and embankments are still impressive although much smaller than its grander neighbour. The site is located 2 kilometres north of Hawera along Turuturu Road in an historic reserve. Te Uma a Tongahake Pa is the first pa as you enter the reserve and it has a name board by it. A detailed site sign showing tapu or sacred areas not to be entered in the historic reserve area appears by the entrance gate. Tawhiti Museum three kilometres from this site has excellent descriptive material about the pa at this historic reserve. The museum website is: http://www.tawhitimuseum.co.nz
