For centuries it was kept on a ridge near the Mohakatino River north of New Plymouth. In 1927 Maori elders decided to lodge it in New Plymouth's museum for safe keeping. It is now housed in the new Puke Ariki Museum in central New Plymouth below Mt Taranaki (also known as Mt Egmont).
