Cairn in Uppland

Type of Site: Grave-field.

Kärrbacka is a grave-field in island of Björkö, on an area 380 x 95-160 m that lies North-West and South-East astride a road from Ansgar chapel to Skogalund. Among the monuments of the cemetery there are 1 cairn, 2 mounds, 10 stone circles, 26 rectangular and 4 tricorn stone settings, 2 stone ships.
The cairn is 20 m in diameter and about 1.7 m high, barrows are 8 and 10 m in diameter and their heights are 0.7 and 0.6 m. Stone circles of various diameters from 3 to 10 m made of small stones of 0.1 - 0.3 m high. The sizes of rectangular stone settings are 5-16 x 3-6 m, stones form the structures are 0.2-0.3 m high. Stone ships are about 7-8 m in length with stem-stones are 0.6-0.9 m high. Tricorn stone settings have sides of 15-20 m and made of stones 0.3-0.4 m high.
14 graves were excavated.
As almost all area is now covered with forest many burials are hardly visible.
When you are going from Ansgar chapel most of the monuments are on the right side, the grave-field is protected from cattle by electric fence, so to come to the burials you should find a gate. There are at least a couple of them, built where the monuments are close to the road, the first one is near a tricorn stone setting, and the second is next to the cairn.
