Burial mound on Adelsö island, Uppland, Sweden
This 2.5 m high and 21 m in diameter mound was the final resting place of a local chieftain. In 1917 the barrow was excavated under supervision of Hanna Rydh. The deceased was cremated in 10-14 m long boat together with another human, probably a servant who willingly followed his master to the other world, two horses (one of which had a richly decorated harness) and a foal, several dogs and a cat and a whole set of different hunting birds. Grave goods also included food and drink, jewellery, silver coins and a board game.
The mound dated to approximately 900 AD.
Excavations also revealed two secondary Viking Age burials in urns. At the bottom of one vessel under the ash was found an egg.
Collection is kept in Historiska museet in Stockholm.
