Eidekjosen Settlement
Eidekjosen Settlement submitted by kenntha88 : Site in Troms Norway (Vote or comment on this photo)
At Hofsøy at Senja is a small but almost complete settlement from the early iron age with longhouse remains and burials as well as a settlement from younger stone age close by. The settlement is located on a large area with information posters and small footpaths. The whole area have sparesly vegetation and most of the settlement remains are easy to find.

The iron age settlement consists of the remains of a longhouse and several burial cairns, it is visible as a elongated depression in the ground with the walls clearly visible, it is overgrown with small moss and smaller birch trees. The longhouse is 30 metres in length and around 10 metres across. It is not clear however if it is one single longhouse or several smaller ones. Excavations are planned for this site. Close by is a line of three burial cairns. The burial cairns are 6-8 metres in diameter and overgrown with moss so they appear more burial mounds than cairns.

200 metres to the north-west is another small burial cemetery, it consists of four small cairns, they are 6-7 metres in diameter and seems to be damaged by plunder. One of them have a visible burial chamber of flat stones in the middle. Further north is yes another small burial cemetery with three small cairns oriented in a triangle.

In 1977 at the south-east end of the settlement where the terrain gets more rocky and higher it was discovered a settlement from younger stone age. The marks of this settlement was almost impossible to find.

The whole area have been made easy to observe due to a cultural footpath that was set up in 2015 and the site have been marked with information posters. It is a very beautiful walk and have a very beauriful nature setting!
