Rock Outcrop in Hungary

The Kőszeg Mountains form a ridge in a north to south direction. The tributaries of the Gyöngyös River created a system of valleys of west to east alignment. The interfluves between these valleys form secondary ridges with steep walls and locally even canyon-like morphology

The southern valley sides, built of greenschists and calcareous phyllite, show benches alternating with cliffs. On the interfluvial ridges spectacular rock formations are found, including the Kalapos-kő (Hat Rock, the name indicating its shape, widening upwards) on the high ridge stretching southwards from the Sötét Valley.

Hat Rock As A Possible Sun Shrine During Late Bronze Age And Early Iron Age Period by Andy B on Thursday, 27 August 2020
(User Info | Send a Message)
Zoltan Mitre, Zoltan (Institute of Geography and Earth Sciences, Faculty of Sciences, University of Pécs) - Gábor Ilon, (Freelance archaeologist)

During the Late Bronze (14th-8th century BC) and Iron Age period (7th-1st century BC) on the top of the Szent Vid hill in the Hungarian Kőszeg-mountain, next to the Amber Road edge along the valley of Gyöngyös river, there was a significant settlement, also a power, industrial and trade center. The Hat Rock is a cliff group of natural origin with a distinctive morphology situated approximately two and a half kilometers from this place, above Bozsok village.

Presently Szent Vid hill is still clearly visible from this place. Archaeological research in both places during the last decades presumed the possible astronomical-related use of the Hat Rock, primarily related to the Sun. At the south part of the cliff group, in a leeward place suitable for shelter too, an archaeological excavation found a fire place and potsherds, clay spoon, grindstone from the Late Bronze - Early Iron Ages.

Based on the geodesy data of the territory of Hat Rock, we found its south-east, north-west direction, which coincides with the direction of the sunrise of the winter solstice and the sunset of summer solstice. In the inner place of the area, among the items of rocks at the highest position, we can determine places, where the approximate Sun positions of summer and winter solstices can be appointed with cliff items. Observation of night sky from here also can help the forecast of times of this Sun positions.

Theoretical Possibility Of The Astronomical Use Of Hat Rock In Bozsok by Andy B on Thursday, 27 August 2020

Theoretical Possibility Of The Astronomical Use Of Hat Rock In Bozsok During The Late Bronze Age Period, Zoltán Mitre, Gábor Ilon

During the Late Bronze (14th-8th century BC) and Iron Age period (7th-1st century BC) on the top of the Szent Vid hill in the in the Kőszeg Mountains, close to the Amber Road along the valley of Gyöngyös river, there was a significant settlement, also a power, industrial and trade center.

At the south part of the cliff group, in a leeward place suitable for shelter too, an archaeological excavation found a fire place and potsherds, a clay spoon and a grinding stone from the Late Bronze - Early Iron Ages. In this research we try to reveal such easily available astronomical related functions of the Hat Rock, which are linked to the time, agricultural activities, maybe the productiveness as well. Based on the geodesy data of the territory of Hat Rock, we found its southeast-northwest direction, which coincides with the direction of the sunrise of the winter solstice and the sunset of summer solstice.

We found that the times of equinoxes of vernal and autumn can be determined by the position of the Sun correlate with given parts of the Hat Rock, observed from the twin rocks, the possible entrance of the procession route. From this observation point, the apparent positions of Pleiades open cluster also the Orion and Taurus constellations close to the horizon can help to determine the time of vernal equinox. This point is also suitable to forecast the time of winter solstice by the position of Altair star. In the inner place of the area, among the items of cliffs at the highest position, we can mark out an observation point, where the approximate time of the event of summer solstice by the observation of the Sun can be determined. The rising and setting Sun shines into the northern hollow part of the cliff of presumed observatory point during the significant agricultural time period, which is determined by this.

The platform shaped cliff item in the highest position from the units of Hat Rock is approachable on a stairway-like path. Its direction coincides with the sunset of the summer solstice also the sunrise of the winter solstice, its feature suitable for ritual purposes. The observers were able to determine the times of annual significant astronomical events of Sun also with the use of skyline and the starry sky from the middle of the area. The significant and other noticeable positions/places we found during our research at the Hat Rock need further archaeological excavations, metal detection works. The complex archaeometrical analysis (like dating, pollen analysis) of possible finds, phenomena cannot be ignored.

Next to the village of Bozsok we find the Kalapos stones in the most romantic part of the KÅ‘szeg Mountains. The rock formations on the surface of the green slate rock delight the tourist visiting with interesting shapes.

Sedimentation has also taken place in the marine environment. The calcareous material mixed with the former volcanic rocks, but remained even after metamorphosis as a softer, easily decaying part. The surface shapes of the shale are due to the fact that the calcareous part weathers more easily, while the harder rocks ("hats") are more resistant to weathering.
There are several small caves in the area.

There are also local legends in the area:

One of the legends holds that giants used to do this and that the rocks are the gnashing teeth of giants. According to another story, one of the caves was inhabited by a devil who, in his rage that a chapel was being built on Mount St. Vid, banged his head on one of the rocks with a large dent in it. This is the story of how the strange rock groups of the Hat-stone and the nearby Wide-Stone were formed.
