Ancient Village or Settlement in Moravia (Czech Republic)
Probably the most important centre and mighty fortress of Great Moravian Empire - of the first real state of western Slavs. It was established between the river Morava and its distributaries on a land of fertile soil and natural defense. It is the largest Slavic archaeological site in Czech Republic and protected cultural heritage.
Location was described even in 1888 but real expert excavation started in 1954. Incredible 5 ha of land had been uncovered till 1995. Evidences showed that the site was alternetly settled since Mezolithic. But its real importance came roughly with arrival of old Slavic people from late 6th century AD with most peak in 9th century.
There are quite strong assumptions that this fortified settlement could have been even the residence of first members of Moymirid dynasty - rulers of Great Moravia. Mikulčice are also connected with activity of Slavic christian missionaries Constantine and Methodius and also possible candidate place of bishop Methodius eternal rest. Centrum was abandoned sometime after 10th century.
The results of the excavations were simply awesome. Huge acropolis surrounded by a stone rampart. The stone walls were up to 7m high! True unconquerable fortress. Foundations of the rulers palace, 12 early christian churches including one large basilica, three bridges, two wooden hollowed boats, more then 2500 graves and abudance of valuable artifacts, weapons and objects of ordinary need.
There is a splendid open air Museum in place today. And also fine interactive indoor exposition. You may walk around the large area or observe it from above by climbing up the lookout tower..
