During the Gravettian period between 28000 and 22000 years ago two kilns existed at an archaeological site near Dolní Věstonice south of Brno in The Czech Republic . Some 7000 fired objects have been retrieved from this site, one of which is the 26000 year old ceramic Venus of Dolní Věstonice. The clay fired objects found here are amongst the oldest know examples of ceramics and include simple representations of animals, men, women, personal ornaments and other icons. The amazing aspect of the finds here is the fact that until the discovery of the Venus of Dolní Věstonice all previous models of the "Mother Goddess" had been made of carved stone, bone or ivory. Another striking find here is the mammoth ivory carved figure of a man dated to around 29000 years before present. Burial remains have been found here too with a female skeleton placed with mammoth bones, a flint spearhead and the body of a fox, perhaps a female sharman's burial site.
The world famous Venus of Dolní Věstonice is normally held in a vault and only rarely available for view by professional archaeologists. However, on the 100th anniversary of the discovery of the similar Venus of Willendorf in Lower Austria the Naturhistorisches Museum in Vienna mounted a special "birthday" celebration for their Venus of Willendorf and invited two other venuses for a unique exhibition. The Venus of Dolní Věstonice was one of these together with the Venus of Moravany from Slovakia. All three original statues were on display for a few weeks in September 2008 and I was lucky enough to see all three at the museum, albeit in very subdued lighting and behind thick glass to protect them.
