This is the oldest musuem in Croatia, being founded in early 19th century when local people started collecting statues and architectural remains fom Salona.

The name Split come from the Latin Spalatum, which derives from the Greek name Aspalathos for a local yellow flower.

" when local people started collecting statues and architectural remains fom Salona" - yeah right (btw is there anything that you write tah is right?)

Archaeological Museum in Split, the oldest museum in Croatia, was founded in 1820 by The decree of the Dalmatian government in Zadar. The impetus for its establishment was the arrival of Emperor Francis I in Dalmatia 1818 , when he visited Split and Solin monuments. The original museum building was erected in 1821.by the eastern walls of Diocletian's palace, soon became too small for the growing number of monuments. A new era in the development of Croatian archeology celebrated the work and activities of don Frane Bulic, since 1884. Director of the Museum of Split.
He is responsible for the construction of the present building of the Archaeological Museum in Split erected in 1914, designs by Viennese architects A. Kirstein and F. Öhman.
