Rock Art in New Caledonia - photographed by NZ historian Des Johnston (Belshade on Meg Portal) in 1979

The Paita Valley petroglyphs are located 25 minutes drive north of Nouméa in New Caledonia. The amazing petroglyphs resemble those seen in Europe but their origins are unconnected. The New Caledonian rock carvings are thought to date to the Naia Oundjo era around 300 AD although there is a possibility that they predate that era. 350 or more petroglyphs have been documented so far in New Caledonia although it is believed that there are hundreds more yet undiscovered. Many are in remote and overgrown areas and are hard to find. There are numbers of them on the eastern coast of the island in addition to the ones featured on this page.

The representation of a spread out human such as several of the images above, are common throughout the world.

See nabta playa and the book 'the origin map' by Robert Brophy for a mighty interesting discussion of these very ancient standing stones in the Sahara.

"The amazing petroglyphs resemble those seen in Europe but their origins are unconnected."

I mean, it's not *likely* that their origins are connected, but this statement seems irresponsibly unproveable. We really don't know enough about either set of petroglyphs or the cultures that created them to make any such claims.

Thanks for your comment. Actually a lot of research has been undertaken on petroglyphs around the world, especially those in the UK which so resemble the one in the photo on this page. There are a number of good books and many academic papers on this subject, although there is a lot of guessing by amateurs too! The British ones date back well into the Neolithic era with some continuation into the Early Bronze Age whilst the New Caledonian ones are much more recent as mentioned in the text on this page. There is no evidence of any cultural, ethnic, DNA, artifact or linguistic connections between these Western European and Pacific cultures which were separated in time by several millenia so I feel that it is not irresponsible to state that they are unconnected.
