Berry Island submitted by DrewParsons : The head of the sea creature draped over the end of the rock. November 2014. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Aboriginal Rock Art in Sydney, Australia. The picture opposite shows the head of the sea creature draped over the end of the rock.

Aboriginal abstract engravings on Berry Island.

Additional Information submitted by Drew Parsons in November 2014: This engraving site comprises a large sea creature, perhaps a whale, etched into the flat rock surface above the cove with the creature's head flopped over the end of the rock. There is an excellent sign and viewing platform at the site which is beside the path which makes a loop around Berry Island Reserve. Berry Island is now connected to the mainland and reached at the bottom of Shirley Road south of Wollstonecraft station on the northern side of Sydney Harbour. It is possible to walk from this site to the nearby Balls Head site along a coast trail. See the Balls Head pages for directions. When I visited Berry Island there were many leaves on the engraving and so it was hard to photograph it clearly. However, the photos show the method of creating the engraving and the site sign pictures below describe this in detail. There is a strange curved shape to the side of the main engraving of the "whale" figure which has been interpreted as a bivalve shell as it is the wrong shape for a boomerang or a crescent moon. However, whilst I was looking at the site a lady who worked in the Aboriginal territories in the north told me that it was a frequently used symbol in the northern tribes paintings to indicate the whole tribe gathered around for a ceremony or event. There is also a polissoir to the side of the main engraving. The OpenStreetMap for Berry Island shows more rock carvings at the northern end of the reserve. There is a large rock area there and a roofed over shelter with an improvised fence so I did not access that area. At the southernend of Berry Island there is a viewpoint with a midden. See the separate page for that site: Gadyan Track Midden
