Frösöstenen is the northern-most raised runestone in the World and Jämtland's only runestone. It originally stood at the tip of ferry terminal on the sound between the island of Frösön and Östersund. It now stands in front of Landstingsborgen "the county council fort/castle", on Frösön. See below for composer Wilhelm Peterson-Berger and the Frösö Runestone.

On it is inscribed:

Austmaðr, Guðfastr's son, had this stone raised and this bridge built and Christianized Jämtland. Ásbjörn built the bridge. Trjónn and Steinn carved these runes.

The following Old Norse person and place names appear in the inscription:

Austmaðr (English: Man from the East) - An Old West Norse[citation needed] speaking man from Mainland Scandinavia. Similarly, Vestmaðr (English: Man from the West) was an Old West Norse-speaking Briton.
Guðfastr (English: He who is faithful to God)
Jamtaland (English: Land of the "Jamtar"- The Old Norse name for Jämtland where jamti may mean 'hard-working person'; cf. German adjective emsig 'hard-working'.
Ásbjörn (English: God Bear)
Trjónn - (English: Snout - A name more or less specific to Jämtland, and also found in several Medieval documents from Jämtland[1])
Steinn (English: Stone)

The stone (J RS1928;66 $) is also unique in that it was done in memory of Austmaðr's Christianization of Jämtland and bridge building, rather than as a cenotaph. The stone dates to between 1030 and 1050. It has now been relocated to the lawn in front of the local county seat due to the construction of a new bridge, between 1969 and 1971, on the original site.

Composer Wilhelm Peterson-Berger and the Frösö Runestone by Andy B on Sunday, 10 June 2018
(User Info | Send a Message)
Composer Wilhelm Peterson-Berger was mainly influenced by the music of Grieg and Wagner, he settled in Stockholm after his studies and composed five symphonies, the opera Arnljot, and many piano compositions.

Arnljot, his largest work, was based on a folkstory originally compiled by Snorre Sturlasson and Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson (scholars similar to the brothers Grimm). The libretto is based on the legendary Viking Arnljot Gelline and the text from the northernmost rune stone in Sweden, the Frösö stone, which also contains the longest text of any rune stone in Swedish history.

Due to the fact that Peterson-Berger based his opera on the text from the rune stone, one of the most important national historic artifacts in Sweden, it quickly became known as Sweden’s "national opera." The translation of the early-Swedish text on the stone talks about the fact that the state of Jämtland was an "independent and self-ruled peasant republic until the kings of Norway and Sweden decided to unite the two landscapes and to introduce the new teaching – Christianity."
