Runestone in Östergötland

- Transcription: Side A: Bisi satti stæin þennsi æftiʀ Þorgaut ..., faður
Side B: sinn ok þau Gunna baði. Þistill/mistill/kistill.

- Translation (Swedish): Side A: Bisse satte sten denna efter Torgöt ..., fader
Side B: sin, de båda (Bisse) och Gunna (satte stenen). Tistel, mistel, kistel.

- Translation (English): Side A: Bisi placed this stone in memory of Torgöt … his father. Side B: And Gunna, both.

(The text was taken from the German Wikipedia page and translated into English)

The approximately 2.9 m high, 55 to 95 cm wide and 40 cm thick Ledbergsten (Ög 181; RAÄ no. Ledberg 6:1) is an exception among Östergötland's otherwise mostly pictureless rune stones. It stands on the cemetery in Ledberg near the local church.
It is more of a picture stone with runes than a runestone, because there are figurative representations on three sides, while the runeband only runs along two side edges. The text states that the memorial stone was erected by Bise for his father Torgöt. Perhaps he was a participant in the Battle of Stiklestad in Norway in 1030, in which King Olav II of Norway also fell, because stylistically the stone fits into this period. After the text there is a series of magical runes that are supposed to protect the stone from damage. The magic formula has the three troll words: 'þistil mistil kistil'. The first two mean thistle and mistletoe. It is believed that the words were attributed magical properties. The same magic has been found several times in the Nordic countries; for example on the runestone of Gørlev 1; DR 239 in Denmark.
The image on one broadside of the stone, probably depicting Torgöt, is one of the best mainland Swedish warrior images of the Viking Age (800-1050 AD). At the top stands a figure wearing the usual smock-like costume of a man in full war gear: pointed helmet with nose guard, shield and sword. This is followed downwards, above and below a warrior with a shield, two representations of the 'great beast' and at the bottom a ship under sail (perhaps the Naglfar) with a row of shields on the railing. The carvings on the other side probably representing Ragnarök. On the other broadside you can see a man wearing a helmet being bitten in the heel. At the bottom is a bent warrior with his arms stretched out. The top man was interpreted as Odin fighting the Fenris Wolf. Different interpretations were presented by Erik Brate (1857–1924) and in 1976 by Sven Birger Fredrik Jansson (1906–1987).
The western narrow side is blank, while the eastern side shows either a cross or Mjölnir.
