Ancient Village or Settlement in Japan
A wide ancient village spanning 6km on the shore near to the 3rd largest lake in Japan, the most largest brackish one, Saroma lake. Peoples of 5 succeeding cultures, Jōmon (6000BCE-0BCE),Post Jōmon(200-500CE),Okhotsk(900CE),Satsumon(1000CE),Ainu(1700CE), lived on this site.
Numerous dwelling pits can be found in the windbreak belt on the shore. On a hill on the westernmost point close to Saroma lake, there is a prehistorical park called "Tokoro-Iseki-no-Mori (ところ遺跡の森 = wood of Tokoro ruin)" where 3 museums and reconstructed Post Jōmon and Satsumon villages lie.
