Tokutan-jō submitted by Aska : Site in Honshū Japan The ruin of the last “jōsaku” and the elementary school (Vote or comment on this photo)
Ancient Village or Settlement in Honshū. In 811 CE, this defensive fortress against Emishi tribe was constructed by Yamato (present day Nara) court as the substitute for Shiwa-jō which was damaged by flood. But the scale was reduced (350m×350m) then the deployed troops were withdrew and at last this latest “jōsaku” (Jō’ means ‘castle’, Saku means ‘fence’) fortress seemed to be abandoned in mid 9th C. It implies the end of Yamato court’s northward policy.

Now only small posts and shrubbery are placed on the traces of pillar of the buildings in the meadow between the playground of a scholl and small wood of a Shintō shrine. A wooden armour-helmet was excavated here and is exhibited in the museum attached.
