History and Folklore Museum Futaba-Machi submitted by DrewParsons : The museum's copy mural of the rock art in Kiyotosaku 76 rock cut tomb. November 1994 (Vote or comment on this photo)
Museum in Honshū displaying historical finds dating from the first settlers on these shores some 15000 years ago, the Kofun (Burial Mound) culture dating between 300 AD and 700 AD and more recent history. The photograph shows the museum's copy mural of the rock art in Kiyotosaku 76 rock cut tomb. November 1994

The History and Folklore Museum at Futaba-Machi is located a couple of hours north of Tokyo along the coastal railway line between Iwaki and Sendai. Displays include finds of fish hooks and pendants excavated at Kooriyama shell midden made by the first settlers along this coast some 15,000 years ago.

The area has many Kofun era tombs and burial mounds too, dating back to between 300 AD to 700 AD. There are more than 500 rock cut tombs and burial mounds from this era around the district and the museum has a nice replica mural of symbols painted inside Tomb 76 at Kiyotosaku. There is also a model of Mumanosawa Tomb 3 burial mound on display.

The Kofun (Burial Mound) era saw a number of different style burial chambers created across the country ranging from the giant "Key Hole" sites such as Daisen Kofun near Osaka: http://www.megalithic.co.uk/article.php?sid=18918
to rock cut tombs and burial mounds which bear a striking resemblance to European passage graves although of course their European counterparts are thousands of years older. The following sites will illustrate this:
