One of numerous “Tate” (館) (or “Jōkan” (城館)), the armed residences of medieval samurai clans. Jō means ‘castle’, Kan and Tate means ‘mansion’. Takaya-tate is one of so-called “42 fortresses in Kazuno district” (鹿角四十二館). On 2 hills across a path, there are flat terraces for wooden buildings (=medieval fortress or watch tower), defending ditch and pasture for horses.
Now the area was occupied by tall cedar trees and such topographic features have become unidentified. The detailed report in Japanese before the cedar trees grew.
This area, just 6km southward from Ōyu stone circle, was utilized as residential place also by ancient Jōmon people and several archaeological site including a stone circle had been excavated but completely demolished by the road construction.
