Devil's Groove

The Devil's Groove is a popular name for landscape formation resembling a massive track-line or groove approx 21 km long, leading between Sázava and Chotouň in Bohemia. Recent archeological surveys (J.Bernat,M.Štědra) have confirmed the surprising fact that the Devil's Groove was originaly constructed in the Neolithic (about 4000 BC).

It was always assumed to be a natural geological fault or man made border line.
This impressive "prehistoric highway" used to have a flat bottom and sloping walls and was 14-21m wide and up to 6m deep. It was a straight connection between two important fords over the rivers of Sázava and Labe (Elbe) ensuring transport of local crystalline limestone to far lands.

In the Middle Ages, the Devil's Groove was associated with a legend of Procopius of Sázava. This Czech saint and hermit allegedly defeated the Devil in fight and forced him to work. The Devil was harnessed to a plough and so the Groove arose.

Unfortunately the Devil's Groove is pretty much destroyed these days, mostly because of agriculture activity, and is visible just in fragments.
