The White Lady Group submitted by DrewParsons : Human figure depicted at Brandberg, Namibia (Vote or comment on this photo)
The White Lady Group of San (Bushman) rock paintings dating from at least 2000 years ago is located in the Brandberg massif which rises to 2573 metres in Damaraland, Namibia.

In February 2005 when I visited the site there was a new sandy, corrugated track from near Uis to the site entrance where official guides wait to take people on the 45 minute walk to the first set of paintings at the "Maack Shelter" an overhanging rock face which is named after the first European to see them (a German explorer - in 1918). The temperature on our walk was 38 degrees centigrade making for a hot hike. There had been no other visitors in the three days before our arrival and apart from a French couple who decided not to walk to the paintings in view of the heat there had been no one else there that day either, so the eight ragged local guides had seen no work for several days.

The White Lady is an misnomer as the white figure herding animals together with other figures who are all in darker shades is now realised from closer inspection of his bodily appendages to be male and most probably a shaman!! My photo of the shaman did not come out well but I have included several photos of the surrounding art. Another twenty minutes hike further up the valley is a second set of rock paintings in a better state of preservation than those by the White Lady, presumably as fewer tourists make the effort to go up to them. My photos are a selection from both sites plus the route there. In warm weather be sure to take plenty of water for the walk.

Hi there,

This report are very interesting, as an amateur archeologist and an ex - professionnal photographer, It would have been interesting to have mesure of the drawing. Beside you can use picasa to make correction on your photo if you do not have photoshop.

Keep on the good work it is very interesting and educational.

Hi Pierre, Thanks for your constructive comments. I wish my French was as good as your English!! Yes, I should have adjusted the photos before posting them to the site. They were taken on a film camera almost 3 years ago and scanned hence the poorer quality of the pictures. I tried to submit the photos a couple of weeks ago but there was no provision for Namibia on the country selection section of the new site submission page, so there was a two week delay in the posting, while Namibia was added to the site and in the interim I forgot to adjust the photos. As for the size, we were not allowed to get close to the paintings, and so a measurement stick / ruler in the picture would not have been feasible. Also, I was not on a specific trip to technically record these paintings so I "snapped" them as an amateur!! I estimate that each photo covers an area of approximately 30 centimetres from top to bottom of the shot. Many thanks for your comments and suggestions. I have friends in Chateau Richer, Quebec - do you know it?
