Is-Salib
Is-Salib submitted by enkidu41 : The local people I spoke to seemed not to know why the stone had been packed at its base. There had been some pretty heavy rainfall in the previous 2 or 3 weeks and I assume that pillar was in danger of falling over. Still, the packing was done with a high degree of craftsmanship. Standing Stone (Menhir) in Malta. A 10' high square-sectioned stone pillar which has been trebly Christianized!

The name (meaning 'The Cross') refers to a cross that was once mounted on its top rather than to either of the two that can be seen engraved on its face near the base. The purpose and function of the stone is not known but it may be the survivor of an otherwise vanished temple.

Co-ordinates taken from a map.

Is-Salib submitted by enkidu41 : Take my word for it - there are 2 engraved simple crosses near the base on this side! (Vote or comment on this photo)

Is-Salib
Is-Salib submitted by enkidu41 : Heavy rain in the previous 2 or 3 weeks probably loosened the foundations rendering the stone unsafe. Hence the very elegant packing. Must have taken all of 5 minutes. Note: The flag is not embedded in the stone! (Vote or comment on this photo)
