Hillfort in Bohemia
The Vltava River (Moldau in German) creates natural north-south axis of the Bohemia. Historical importance of this river, a key trade route of the region, is reflected by a line of the Celtic fortified settlements along its steep slopes (for good examples see the pages for Oppidum Závist and Oppidum Hrazany.
La Tène culture oppidim Třísov is the most southern one. This mighty fort was established in the 2nd century BC on the flat top of promontory created by the loops of the Vltava river on the SE and by the valley of the Kremžský creek on the North.
The strongest line of fortification was constructed towards vulnerable western approach. Remains of the earthen ramparts and stony walls are still well recognizable there. Rich archeological findings confirmed proccessing of iron ore, metal casting, glassmaking and also coin minting. Oppidum Třísov was special for the presence of two acropolis whereas northern acropole probably served as place of a cult.
The whole place is open to the public, is well signposted and there is a explanatory tourist trail.
