Prague Castle Obelisk
Prague Castle Obelisk submitted by ladrin : Prague Castle Obelisk and the Bishop’s Palace and St. Vitus Cathedral behind it. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Although I always prefer old prehistoric stone monuments, this modern monolith in the area of Prague castle is something special, particularly for its placement. 15.5 metres tall and weighs 110 tons slim piece of fine polished granite proudly stands on the Third Prague Castle Courtyard right next to the Bishop’s Palace in the shadow of mighty towers of St. Vitus Cathedral.

Erected was in 1928 according the plans by J. Plečnik on and was financed from private funds of the first Czechoslovak president T.G. Masaryk to commemorate the victims of the First World War. During the challenging transport from a quarry at Šedova skála near Telč (cca 150km) was two times broken. In 1996 was decorated with a 2 metres high pyramid from golden-plated metal.
