Simris Rock Carving Panel is located just south of Simrishamn town where the Branteviksvägen meets the coast. There is a large car parking area across the road from the site on the coast side of the road. The site is one of several around Simrishamn town but this panel is the most famous and is known as the "Rock of Axes" due to the number of well defined carvings of ceremonial Bronze Age axes on its surface. It is one of the oldest Bronze Age rock carving sites in Scandinavia having been dated to around 1500 BC.

Being right on the main road the site attracts all sorts of visitors and disappointingly the detailed site sign has been vandalised with the text now hard to read. There are similar sites to the north of the town and along the coast. Inland 500 metres is the Simris 27 rock art site which is almost undamaged and contains 39 figures and 10 cup marks.

The 10 metre by 18 metre panel contains around 170 carvings ranging from the above mentioned axes to ships and their crews, circles with crosses representing wheels, small phallic men carrying the axes, animals and perhaps a cloak (which resembles a cloak recovered from a peat bog in Västergötland).

Unlike some Scandinavian rock carvings, these are not painted but are so deeply etched that they can be easily seen.

The above text says: disappointingly the detailed site sign has been vandalised with the text now hard to read.
Vila Nova de Foz Côa, Portugal is the part of the Côa Valley Archaeological site. Its rock art is marvelous. One of the most surprising and unique thing that you can see there: next to the ancient carvings, there are new carvings like the Cross and maybe a locomotive. These carvings don’t disturb, rather complete each other.
Here, there is a text carving, however it does not ruin or hurt the ancient ones, it was carved on a “clean” place. The text is really not readable (for us at least), so we do not know the message. But one of its message is obvious: the difference between the ancient and the some year old message. The technique of the ancient carvings is much more sophisticated as after hundreds of years it is still “readable”.
