Standing Stone (Menhir) in Bohemia

Vinařice mountain is the residue of Tertiary stratovolcano northwest from Prague. Its ancient name, long time lost by now, was Ovenky hill. Rugged gorges of this allegedly sacred mountain attracted people since time immemorial. The presence of menkind was confirmed even in far prehistory by dicovery of Paleolithic human scull together with rhino bone at its foothill.

More archeological findings confirm intensive settlement from 6th century BC, through the Migration Period until Early medieval. The first written record dates from 13th century.

The story of local menhir is quite unclear today. It is said that its original location was on the top of the mountain (spot height 413m). Some sources talks about secondary top though (408m). It is also possible that there were more standing stones on the hill. The large boulder was found in 1943 on the eastern slope. According geologists obviously in a non-original position. Probably rolled down from the top. Anyway this stone was later lost, destroyed and used by local people.

Small fragment of the menhir was saved though. With some sort of respect it was moved to the centre of the Vinařice village and today is the part of Great War monument. White distinctive quartzite of size 0,75m x 1,1m x 0,4m. It is funny that on my first "cycle stop" I automatically assumed that The Menhir is that large one. Only after some more research I found my mistake..
