There are practically no prehistoric monuments similar to stone circles in Bohemia existing today. Several reports and illustrations mostly from 19th century show evidence that circles were pretty common, but as many other megalithic monuments, did not survive till our times unfortunately. Today we can talk just about fragments at most.
So the archaeologists were even more surprised by the discovery on private property near the village of Cehnice. During the construction of a new pond (unauthorized BTW) prehistoric pottery shreds were discovered between obviously regularly aligned stones.
Expert survey of the site confirmed prehistoric social-cultic monument from the period of so called "Knovíz culture" (Late Bronze Age). The object was identified as a cromlech of rather oval shape consiting of nine outer and one central stone. All were coarse-grained granite boulders of the local origin from 0,5 - 1m high.
Being on private property the site was preserved somehow and findings were deposited in regional muzeum at Strakonice. Apart of pottery shreds it consists also of mesolithic flintstones pieces. Heavy machinery then after carried on its work which after some time was stopped definitely. New pond never completed. And as a reasult, the site was totaly damaged. Today it is desolate and completely lost in dense and wild vegetation.
Municipal authority built in the center of the village some nice modern stone monument as a reminder of its ancient history. (It will surely deserves its own topic.) Also an explanatory reminder can be found on a tourist information board.
One funny fact. Archeologists discovered also unusual objects that caused quite a mess. Two small lightwight pyramids of green colour. Some people became spreading wild theories. But soon was confirmed that both pyramids were simply fabricated by some joker (actually made of acrylate) and simply planted to the place of excavation.
