The barrow cemetery is situated on top of a huge hill overlooking Vassås church, inside a very pretty pine tree forest. From the site there is a beautiful view over the surrounding mountains, thick forests and the sea that cuts far inland.
A path has been constructed leading through the site and signposts have been set up.
Sadly, the area is partially overgrown with smaller brush vegetation, high grass and lots of smaller forest vegetation, making some of the artifacts very hard to photograph.
The site contains a star-shaped burial cairn, each of the three "arms" are about 10 metres in length from the centre. It does not elevate much above the ground, only about 0,4 metres in height. Three small "bridges" have been made leading across the small ditch that surround the cairn.
Just next to it is a large elongated barrow. It is about 30 metres in length, about 6 metres wide and about 1 metre in height. It is hard to see as it is overgrown with brush.
Further up the path leading to the top of the hill are three more elongated barrows. They are about 15-20 metres in length, 2-3 metres wide and about 1 metre in height. One of them is in a small grassy field and has been ploughed away, but the small low impression still is visible. The other two elongated mounds are very overgrown. This area has the local name "Sjurahaugen".
On top of the hill is a very large, beautiful round mound. It is about 25 metres across and about 4 metres in height. It has a clear and deep ditch around the edge. There is a large crater on top, but it has been restored in later years. It is partially overgrown, but the barrow is easily visible once you are next to it. This mound has the local name St.Hans Mound.
All these burials are a sign, that this area have had an important population in the iron age.
One of the most beautifully located sites I have visited!
