Ancient Village or Settlement in Honshū

An American zoologist Edward S. Morse (1838-1925), one of so-called ‘oyatoi gaijin’ (=foreign scholars-engineers employed by Japanese Restoration government) found this Jōmon-era site in 1877 through the window of newly operated ‘train’ on the way from foreign settlement in Yokohama to Tokyo. This site is the starting point of Japanese archaeology.

The area was originally near the seashore but then severely developed into a residential town, the development has made exact position of the site unclear so neighbouring Shinagawa- and Ōta-wards both set up their own signposts within each territory.

A Scottish surgery Henry Faulds (1843-1930) also participated to the excavation of this site and found the fingerprints of ancient men on the excavated Jōmon pottery and he hit upon the idea of personal identification by fingerprint pattern.
