Mount Gambier is a city in the southeastern corner of South Australia. It’s known for its limestone, volcanic landscape and crater lakes. One of these, Blue Lake, turns cobalt blue in summer. Nearby, the Centenary Tower offers panoramic views of the area. The Umpherston Sinkhole contains a lush sunken garden. The Lady Nelson Visitor Centre houses a full-size replica of a late-18th-century ship.
The volcano is the most recent to have erupted on the mainland. 5,000 yrs ago and is still classed as dormant rather than extinct. A maar volcano, that is hot magma rising meets the limestone water table which explodes violently creating one or more craters. The main crater contains the 'blue lake' which changes colour with the seasons. The whole area extending for hundreds of miles is limestone with numerous caves some of which have collapsed to form sinkholes. About 12 miles away is Mt. Schank another maar volcano but the basalt base of the crater is above the water table.
Evidence of aboriginal mining is found in many of the open caves. Click here for further details from Australia: The Land Where Time Began.
Tantanoola Caves not far away has excellent examples of stalactite and stalagmite formations. Because of the mainly dry conditions the growth has been measured at only 8cm p.a. Click here for image, and click here for Link to Trip Advisor.
