Koumare-ishi submitted by Aska : Site in Honshū Japan The priests cemetery of Daikō-ji temple, utilizing the cocoon stones of Koumare-shi. (Vote or comment on this photo)
in Honshū

From the riverside cliff in a mountain, strange cocoon-shaped stones stick out and fall down to the ground by the river gradually. Koumere-ishi means ‘baby bearing stones (or spawned-like baby stones)’, it has been regarded as one of 7 secrets in Enshū (present day Shizuoka prefecture). In fact they are geological ‘nodule’ of sandstone produced in the stratum of sands and the nodule come out by the collapse of surrounding sand stratum.
Nearby Buddhist temple Daikō-ji (大興寺 34.73051N,138.15776E) utilize these stones for the tombstones of successive chief priests.
