Misc. Earthwork in Kyūshū

Along with “muya”, “yabaya” is another burial system of Kikai-jima island. It is a vertical pit made of surrounding pile of coral lime stones and house-shaped urns with roof-shaped cap both made of coral lime stone are placed inside. The pit might have been roofed with grass. The local investigator believes that artificial “muya” are the tombs for powered families, cave burial and “yabaya” are the communal graveyards of ordinary people.
