Modern Stone Circle / Monolith in Honshū

Behind the wooden building of the Shinto shrine, huge rocks are rolling. They seem to be a random assembly of natural stones but they form the artificial arrangements of bridge, crane and tortoise (both are the symbols of longevity and eternity) shapes which are the principle elements of the dry landscape gardens.

Although it lies in the heart of Yōkaichi (八日市) town, only discovered as a dry landscape garden not a natural outcrop by the modern gardener Mirei SHIGEMORI (1896-1975) in 1936. This garden is supposed to be originally constructed for a temple or a samurai's residence, after the collapse of the original building a shrine seemed to be built to warship the solemnity of the stones.
