Hillfort in Honshū

In Kumano region which occupies the southern part of Kii peninsula and is registered as a UNESCO World Heritage, there lie long stone-piled walls called "shishigaki (shishi=wild boar + gaki(kaki)=fence) extending over Mie and Wakayama prefectures, its length is estimated to be more than 70km although it often branches and discontinues.

Shishigaki distributes from central Japan to Ryūkyū islands, over-laps the distribution of wild boars who has too short legs to survive in snowy regions. The shishigaki in Kumano is too long, so some people suppose that it is not an agricultural fence but a military facility like Hadrian's Wall.

The old pilgrimage paths in Kumano are being maintained, but many parts of shishigaki are now hidden in the dense bush. At following 2 points, shishigaki runs close to the pilgrimage path and is easily observed :
Hago Tōge (羽後峠) mountain path and Daikan Shishigaki-michi (大観猪垣道) path between Ōbuki Tōge (大吹峠) mountain path and Kannon-michi (観音道) path.

Japanese folklore: Prehistoric nature worship and pre-medieval Kumano by Andy B on Thursday, 09 April 2015
(User Info | Send a Message)
Since prehistoric times until the present, the Kumano area has been regarded as a sacred, mystical abode of the gods and a place for miraculous healing. To read more about prehistoric nature worship and pre-medieval Kumano, see Descent of deities in the land of Kumano

There are numerous legends of deities descending onto trees, water pools or waterfalls, rocks, and mountains in Japan.
