Carving in Honshū

Kasagi-dera temple is situated on Mt.Kasagi-yama (289m alt.) and supposed to be built to worship this “magai-butsu” (cliff-carved Buddha, 15m high) in 7th century (?).

This temple suffered 3 fires including the battle between the emperor and the shogunate in 1331, so the carving of this magaibutsu was flaked off and only the halo behind the statue remains like a ghost.

There is another survived magaibutsu along the strolling route in the precinct.

Ma=grind + Gai=cliff + Butsu=Buddha
