Hayato-ishi (Nara)
Hayato-ishi (Nara) submitted by Aska : Site in Honshu Japan: The mouse-headed mas stone on the left edge of the burial mound can be seen through the posts. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Sculptured Stone in Honshū

In the enclosure of Naoyama-no-haka (那富山墓) tomb, attribured to Prince Kiō (727-728), 4 stones of the engravings of naked men with the heads of Chinese zodiac animals stand. Only the mouse-headed man can be seen from outside of the barbed wire fence, the others (rabit-, ox- and dog-headed) are not visible, as they are almost worn out by rain and weather.
These stones may be influenced by old Korean (United Silla) burial mounds with the engravings of 12 zodiac animal-headed men, armed or wearing folk costumes. These stones may be the survivors from what originaly may have been 12 stones.
