Modern Stone Circle etc in Honshū
The Japanese capital was moved to Heijō-kyō (present day Nara) from southern Asuka district in 710 CE. The palace adopted the grid system of the city of Chang’an of Chinese Tang dynasty. Then the emperors of Heijō-kyō palace were annoyed by the growing force of the Buddhist priests in the new capital who became to be the independent military power. The palace was frequently abandoned to escape from the Buddhists’ menaces, the capital was moved to Nagaoka-kyō (長岡京 present day Nagaokakyō city, neighbouring Kōyto) in 784 CE then at last settled in Heian-kyō (平安京 present day Kōyto) in 794 CE and lasted for 1000 years (including the collapsed period in the civil war era in late 15th to end of 16th C).
Since then Heijō-kyō fell into the wilderness (present town of Nara has survived as the eastern satellite city). In the vast wilderness of Heijō-kyō palace (4.3km×4.8km) numerous artefacts were excavated, in 1978 from the outside of the southern edge, the ruin of pond garden was discovered and then maintained as the historical park. Now more 18 garden ruins have been discovered inside and outside of the palace and 2 of them are maintained as historical sites.
