Bussoku-seki of Yakushi-Ji temple
Bussoku-seki of Yakushi-Ji temple submitted by Aska : Site in Honshū Japan The carved upper surface is scarcely seen. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Before the arrival of Hellenism (the Greek statue-making culture; Anabasis of Alexander the Great) to India, Buddhism denied idol worship like Islam and worshipped indirect icons. This one placed in the Great Lecture Hall (Daikōdō 大講堂) of Yakushi-ji temple in Nara city is the oldest in Japan. The Buddha footprints include pictorial symbols which represent Buddha’s virtue on fingers, root, centre and heel. Bu(t)s = Buddha + Soku = foot + Seki = stone.

It is a rePRINT of the Indian original like other scriptures introduced to Japan.

Other examples of icons are the Bodhi tree ; Śarīra (= fragment of bone of Buddha). Buddha footprint is another indirect worship target of Buddhism.
