One of the UNESCO World Heritage sites in Kyoto, most well-known Zen garden built around 15th-16th century. The meditational positioning of 15 stones in a white sand like an abstract painting has given inspirations to many artists e.g. John Cage and Tangerine Dream. Only 14 of the stones can be seen from any position and the wall behind the garden, whose inmost height is smaller than the height of the gateway, produces exaggerated perspective.
Open 8:00-17:00 (8:30-16:30 Dec.-Feb.), admission 600 Japanese Yen (2024 price).
