Sculptured Stone in Honshū

Yachūji temple is one of the oldest (7th century) Buddhist temples. Once all the buildings were burnt down including the pagoda. The foundation stone of the pagoda has engravings of eyes and claws, which looks like those of a tortoise. It may be derived from Chinese tortoise-shaped epitaphs (gwibu, kwibu, 龜趺, 亀趺).
