Sculptured Stone in Honshū

Gohyaku Rakan (五百羅漢 = 500 arhats, the pupils of the Buddha while he was alive, like the 12 apostels of Jesus) is one of popular subjects for Buddhist images, most of the statues were expressed in realistic or patterned style. The nearly-500 arhats in the precinct of Rakan-ji (羅漢寺) temple, chronology unknown - maybe medieval, were sculptured in more simple and rough style, seems like the statues made by the travelling monk Enkū (円空) (1632–1695), Korean Jangseung totems or Corsican statue menhirs.

Open 9:00-17:00 all year long, admission 200 Japanese Yen.
