The underground tunnel tombs (underground cave tombs, tombs with underground corridor style chamber) are burial system peculiar to the area spanning from southern Miyazaki and eastern Kagoshima during 5th to 6th century.
They have vertical entrance pit, entrance horizontal corridor and chamber, the chamber often has components of house like gable ceiling and mural engravings. They have no surface structures on the ground so are discovered by chance during the cultivation works or subsidence accidents.
HigashiNiwara site contains 16 underground tunnel tombs and 1 round tumulus, from the tunnel tombs 21 skeletons, their accessories and arms were excavated. 2 of the tunnel tombs are preserved in a pavilion which are open to public on the 3rd Sunday of every month.
