Rock cut tomb in Kyūshū
“Muya” might be derived from ‘moya’ (‘mo’=mourning, ‘ya’=house) although this is not a house but the artificial cave burial which is called “tofuru-baka” (= tomb connected (to the other world)) in the neighbouring Amami-Ōshima island. On Kikai-jima island, there are also non-artificial (=natural) cave burial sites which are also called “muya”.
