Passage Grave in Västergötland

Valsted 8:1 is one of two large Neolithic passage graves south of the village of Valstad. There is a huge mound 35 metres in diameter 1.5 metres high, on top of which an inner mound has been built which is 18 metres in diameter and a further 1.5 metres high making the site a dominant feature in the landscape. In the photographs it's possible to see the twin mounds one on top of the other. The site was heavily overgrown in September 2011 but I managed to climb through the bushes and brambles to reach the capstones, one of which has three cup marks on it according to Riksantikvarieämbetet Fornsök although the stones were overgrown with moss when I visited and so I could not see the cup marks.

The really interesting feature about this site is the inner mound which has a ring of pink granite boulders around its perimeter. The site was excavated in 1986 and 1987 and finds included pot sherds and flint and bone around the passage entrance, and some material on the original Neolithic ground surface level which included pieces of polished axes, bone and flint flakes - some affected by fire. Other finds included Iron Age pot sherds and bones so the site has had a long history of use. The nearby twin mound of Valstad 9:1 lays some 250 metres north east. Tilley (see references below) calls this site and its nearby twin "Valstad Klockaregården Passage Graves". To reach the site drive east from Falköping on highway 193 and turn south at Folkabo. Drive south through the village towards Bäck. 1.2 kilometres south of the village the site is 190 metres into a field on the west (right) side of the lane.
