On the first Sunday of Advent in 1848, today's church was consecrated on the same site as the old one. The stone was placed in the wall of the new church with its back into the wall and its face towards the churchyard. In the 1920s it was removed from the wall and placed in the churchyard as a memorial (Minneslund) at the end of the main passage. The stone broke during transport, but was put back together.
In the middle of the stone is 'The Great Beast' (Swedish: 'det stora djuret'). It has been interpreted in various ways, such as a wolf or an heraldic panther that 'often breathes fire through the mouth and nose, is horned, and has hind legs like a lion, while the front legs are like an eagle.' Most researchers, who commented on the interpretation of the 'Great Beast' did not get beyond the formal description and did not comment on the meaning.
On about 200 Swedish rune stones from the late Viking Age, figurative representations are carved next to the text in a snake band. Among them are about 100 representations of four-legged creatures. Until recently, research has mainly been devoted to the search for models of the 'Big Beast'.
A warship is also shown. The Vikings are known for their ships, which are depicted on many runestones. The ship on the runestone of Tullstorp is not a Viking ship, but an East Roman warship with a high board and ramming constructions at the bow and stern, roughly of the ship type of a dromon. An almost identical ship is depicted on a runestone in distant Östergötland.
The Tullstorp runestone is totally unique and comparable to the large runestone from Jelling in southern Jutland, which also dates from the time of Harald Bluetooth. Historical evidence tells us that the Tullstorp runestone is a memorial stone to the Christian importance of Ulf, who was a big man from the neighborhood and a bodyguard for the emperor of the old Eastern Roman Empire. The stonework is done in a way that is not common for Scanian-Danish runestones. The composition of the image is great compared to other South Scandinavian runestone carvings.
