This site is a large rock carving site from the older stone age. The carvings are all picturing animals, mostly elks and reindeer, but also a large whale and a bear.

There are known 12 different panels with 23 figures in total. A path shows the way to the first panel, the rest of the panels are up to the visitor to find. They are spread around on a large area.

The first carving right beside a sign is of a large elk with the neck and head of another elk or reindeer right under the head of the complete figure. There are also a lot of other lines carved on top of the two figures, probably from other figures where parts of them have eroded away and are no longer visible.

About 30 metres away from this panel is the head and neck of another elk carving, and when I was looking around for more panels, I saw another beautiful carving of a bear. It is small and the bear figure have a very long snout.

On a panel above the first panel is a large panel with at least 4 different pictures, one of them of a elk is about 4,5 metres in length, the largest rock carving of a four-legged animal in Europe, it is overlapped by a huge whale figure, about 6,5 metres in length. There is also a lot of other animals or parts of animal carvings on this panel. These carvings were the ones I could find at my visit. Probably some of them are hidden under moss or other vegetation.

The carvings have been "grinded" into the rock and not cut or carved like in many other sites. This type of carvings are also known from sites like Sagelv and Vågan.

They have been dated back to the older stone age, about 6000-7500BC.

Signs and stairs were built to ease visits in the steep terrain.

Åmøy Carvings submitted by kenntha88 : The very pretty bear carving. Note the long snout. Maybe it was supposed to be a very young bear?

Åmøy Carvings
Åmøy Carvings submitted by kenntha88 : The neck and head of a figure, maybe the rest of it has eroded or was never finished?

Åmøy Carvings
Åmøy Carvings submitted by kenntha88 : The figure has very nice shaped lines clearly visible.
